Mpreg Obsession: Tell us about yourself.
Michael: I’m a happily married mother of two from Chicago. I’ve been writing professionally for 8 years now under several pseudonyms including Michael Mandrake.
Mpreg Obsession: What inspired you to write in the Mpreg sub genre?
Michael: I’d say reading other authors. My first MPREG reads were by Wolf Specter. After reading his fated mates series, I devoured more of them. Along the way, I decided I wanted to try my hand at it. Who can resist writing hot men getting preggers? *winks*
Mpreg Obsession: What inspired you to write this story?
Michael: Renewed Faith is the sequel to Breakable Faith. When I agreed to write something for Vale Valley, I wanted to do something different than the other MPreg stories. In all my work, I love going against the grain. Since I’m fascinated with priests in one way or the other, I created my first character, Father Lance Mulroney. He’s a 39-year-old virgin, fully connected to his church. When he meets tattoo artist, Mateo Delacruz, everything goes haywire. This book is the end of their story arc where they get over Lance coming into his own as an alpha and becoming a father.
Mpreg Obsession: What are you planning to write next?
Michael: I’m planning on getting back into my regular contemporary works with my other muse, BLMorticia as well as finish my next dark romance, Love Kills as part of another author collaboration I’m working on.
Mpreg Obsession: What type of research do you do for your work?
Michael: I love researching things. For this book, not so much since it was the sequel. I did look up things about PTSD and how this might affect pregnancy. For other books, I’ve used every medium possible. Google, Youtube, bought books about particular subjects, anything I can put my hands on to learn more about the subjects I’m writing about.
Mpreg Obsession: Who is your favorite character you've ever written?
Michael: Ooh, that’s a tough one. So many of them, how can I choose? Right now, I’d have to say Seth Davies from my book, Push under BLMorticia. He was gorgeous, brash, and had a British accent. Just hot AF. *laughs* Mateo is definitely a close second or third though. He’s also brash, tattooed, and has an accent, a Spanish one. *winks*
Mpreg Obsession: Do you read while writing? Why or why not?
Michael: At first, I didn’t because I was afraid of picking up something and being influenced by what I read. However, I learned that was the best thing to do. Why? Because you’d know what NOT to write.
Also, reading in the subgenre you’re writing in is important, especially when you’re new to it, like I am to MPreg. Although I’ve kind of bent the rules of omegaverse, I still wanted to see how other authors have tackled this subject. Research is your friend.
Mpreg Obsession: Are you a plotter or fly by the seat of your pants kind of writer?
Michael: I’m a little of both. It truly depends on the story. For some books I write out details, the character ARC’s, everything I can to get ready for the story, while others I totally let the characters carry me. For Breakable and Renewed, I let them carry me where they wanted to go.
Mpreg Obsession: What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Michael: Have a plan! Don’t come into writing thinking you’ll be the next EL James or JK Rowling, because that won’t always happen. Stay even keel so you don’t set yourself up for failure later.
Michael Mandrake pens complex characters already comfortable with their sexuality. Through these, he builds worlds not centered on romance but rather the mainstream and/or obscure plots we might encounter in everyday life and beyond
